Last Thursday me and around 20 other bloggers attended the 6:30 showing of REN's new skincare advert/mini film. After getting very lost, I finally found the venue at the top of an office block. The event was held at what I assume is the REN skincare HQ. First of all we helped ourselves to a buffet dinner, and then sat down for a presentation about REN and their new products - all of which sound fab!
If you haven't heard about REN's new film, you can watch it 'here', please be aware that this film is for over 18's and if your under 18 keep your innocence a little longer!
Now onto my thoughts. I personally don't see the relevance that this film has to skincare, the whole sex scene doesn't seem necessary really. If I'd been filmed doing that in a lake, one thing I wouldn't feel would be clean. Saying that, people say 'there's no such thing as bad publicity', which luckily for REN seems to be true, as many more people have heard of REN skincare now! I do think that they are spreading brand awareness, personally I do think they could have done it in a more dignified way.
What do you think to this new film? Some people love it, some hate it, does anyone stand in the middle?
Becca :) x
Disclosure: This event was provided free of charge, however, I did express my feelings about the video.

Being a business student, I can see how much publicity this would bring about for REN but I see it as a totally pointless advertisement and it's very inappropriate. Call me a prude but it's just not something I'd really associate with skincare at all!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you here :) would have liked to have seen more about the products in the film too.
DeleteYou're right about the publicity. I hadn't heard of this brand until loads of people started talking about the "controversial" advert. Personally, I think they went a bit too far and I didn't see the relevance of it at all. However, the aim of an advert is usually to get people's attention; and that they most certainly did.
ReplyDeleteI guess they got what they wanted from it :)
DeleteI've got a few issues with this, firstly they've used an old gospel song and stolen a scene from the film 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou'. Secondly they are playing up to Scandinavian stereotypes of being sexually liberated enough to have sex in the lake and walk around naked afterwards. This video wouldn't work if the couple were British or American.
ReplyDeleteI say cheap stunt - I think their skincare is rubbish anyway. I've used a few things and wasn't impressed. They should concentrate on making their products better rather than pandering to the lowest common denominator.
I can't comment on their skincare as I haven't really used it properly yet. It is a cheap stunt though, I agree with you there :D.
DeleteCame across your post just now; tried to watch the video. It said something like:
ReplyDeleteThis video is private.
Sorry about that.
Serves them right, I guess. Lol :)
